Capecitabine, which is the generic name for Xeloda, is a chemotherapy drug used to treat the following cancers; Colon or rectal cancer, metastatic breast cancer, esophageal, gastric, hepatobiliary, neuroendocrine, pancreatic, ovarian, fallopian tube, peritoneal, or unknown primary cancers (off-label use)

Capecitabine tablets are available in 2 doses; 150mg and 500mg. Your doctor will determine which dose is right for you after close analysis. 

Xeloda (Capecitabine) belongs to the group of chemotherapy called antimetabolite, which slows or stops the growth of cancer cells that are eventually destroyed by the body.

You should take Xeloda (Capecitabine) 30 minutes after eating and swallow the pill whole with water. Never break, crush, or chew Xeloda (Capecitabine). Your doctor will determine your dosage and schedule. Always follow the orders from your physician or the directions on the medication label.

The brand name for Capecitabine is Xeloda. 

Common Side Effects (Seen in >30% of Patients)

These are typically manageable but should still be discussed with your oncologist:

• Diarrhea

• Hand-foot syndrome (redness, swelling, pain, or peeling of palms and soles)

• Nausea

• Vomiting

• Stomach pain

• Fatigue or weakness

• Loss of appetite

• Sores in the mouth (stomatitis or mucositis)

• Low white blood cell count (neutropenia)

• Low red blood cell count (anemia)

• Low platelet count (thrombocytopenia)

Less Common Side Effects (10–30% of Patients)

These may still significantly impact your daily life:

• Constipation

• Indigestion or heartburn

• Headache

• Dizziness

• Trouble sleeping

• Hair thinning

• Back pain

• Joint or muscle pain

• Skin rash or itching

• Increased sweating

• Swelling of the hands, feet, or face (edema)

• Taste changes

• Weight loss

Xeloda (Capecitabine) is taken orally (by mouth) in pill form. Do not crush, cut, or chew this medication. 

It’s important to take your medication as scheduled. If you miss a dose of Xeloda or Capecitabine, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Never take a double dose, or adjust your dosing schedule. If you skip more than one dose contact your doctor or one of our pharmacists to discuss how you should proceed with your next dose.

• Anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin
  • Xeloda may increase the effect of blood thinners, raising the risk of bleeding. Frequent INR monitoring is required if you take both.
• Phenytoin (Dilantin)
  • Capecitabine can raise phenytoin levels, increasing the risk of toxicity.
• Leucovorin or folinic acid supplements
  • May enhance the effects—and side effects—of capecitabine.
• Allopurinol
  • May reduce the efficacy of Xeloda.
• Herbal supplements and megavitamins
  • Especially avoid St. John’s wort, garlic, ginseng, and high doses of antioxidants (vitamin C, E) unless cleared by your oncologist.
• Live vaccines
  • Avoid vaccines like MMR or varicella during treatment, as your immune system may not be able to handle live viruses.
