Lupron Depot (leuprolide) costs about $1,855 to $13,216 per injection before insurance, depending on the dose. Longer-lasting doses cost more per shot, but every dose works out to roughly $1,850 to $2,210 per month of treatment. Very few patients pay these cash prices: commercial insurance, Medicare Part B, and assistance that QuickRx applies for on your behalf can bring the cost down a great deal. Eligible patients may pay $0.
How Much Does Lupron Depot Cost?
Lupron Depot is priced per injection kit, and the cash price ranges from about $1,855 for the 1-month 3.75 mg dose to about $13,216 for the 6-month 45 mg dose.
Which dose you get depends on what Lupron Depot is treating. According to the FDA-approved labeling, the 3.75 mg and 11.25 mg doses are used for endometriosis and for anemia caused by uterine fibroids, and the 7.5 mg, 22.5 mg, 30 mg and 45 mg doses are used for advanced prostate cancer. Your doctor chooses the dose and schedule; never change them on your own.
Is the 3-Month or 6-Month Lupron Shot Cheaper?
The 3-, 4- and 6-month Lupron shots cost more per injection but about the same per month as the monthly shot.
For prostate cancer, every dose in the table above works out to about $2,200 per month of treatment. The real difference is how often you need an office visit. Your doctor decides which schedule fits your treatment.
How Much Does Lupron Cost With Insurance?
With commercial insurance, what you pay for Lupron depends on your plan’s deductible, copay or coinsurance, and whether the plan requires prior authorization.
Many plans cover Lupron Depot, but the out-of-pocket share can still be high. Patients with commercial insurance may qualify for the manufacturer copay card, and QuickRx applies for it on your behalf at no charge. Learn more on our Lupron copay assistance page.
Does Medicare Cover Lupron?
Yes. Medicare usually covers Lupron Depot under Part B when a doctor or nurse gives the injection, and after the Part B deductible you pay up to 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, according to Medicare.gov.
Supplemental insurance (Medigap) may cover some or all of that share. Manufacturer copay cards cannot be used with Medicare, Medicaid or other government insurance. Foundation grants may help Medicare patients with their share when funds are open, and QuickRx applies for them on your behalf. Is There a Generic Lupron Depot?
There is no generic version of the long-acting Lupron Depot shot; generic leuprolide acetate is available only for some formulations.
Long-acting depot injections use a special release technology, and each brand has its own release pattern (source: Lexidrug). MedlinePlus explains that long-acting leuprolide is injected by a doctor or nurse in a medical office or clinic. Ask your doctor before switching between leuprolide products.
