Common Side Effects

  • High blood pressure (hypertension)

  • Rash

  • Dry skin

  • Abdominal pain

  • Fatigue

  • Constipation

  • Joint pain (arthralgia)

  • Muscle pain (myalgia)

Serious Side Effects

1. Arterial Occlusive Events

These include:

  • Heart attacks (myocardial infarction)

  • Stroke

  • Peripheral arterial disease

  • Serious narrowing of blood vessels

Note: These events have occurred as early as 2 weeks into treatment and are a major concern with Iclusig.

2. Venous Thromboembolism

  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)

  • Pulmonary embolism (PE)

3. Heart Failure

  • New or worsening congestive heart failure has been reported.

4. Liver Toxicity (Hepatotoxicity)

  • Elevated liver enzymes (AST, ALT)

  • Liver failure (rare but life-threatening)

5. Pancreatitis

  • Sudden inflammation of the pancreas

  • Marked by abdominal pain, nausea, and elevated lipase/amylase

6. Myelosuppression

  • Low blood counts, including:

    • Neutropenia (risk of infection)

    • Anemia (fatigue)

    • Thrombocytopenia (risk of bleeding)

7. Ocular Toxicity

  • Blurred vision

  • Retinal hemorrhage

  • Dry or irritated eyes


Laboratory Abnormalities

  • Elevated:

    • AST/ALT (liver enzymes)

    • Lipase/amylase (pancreas)

    • Creatine phosphokinase (muscle injury marker)

    • Serum creatinine (kidney function)

  • Decreased:

    • Platelets

    • Red and white blood cell counts


Less Common Side Effects

  • Mouth sores (stomatitis)

  • Dry eyes or visual disturbances

  • Hair thinning

  • Increased cholesterol or triglycerides

  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea)

  • Chest pain, trouble breathing, or sudden weakness

  • Vision changes or slurred speech

  • Sudden, severe abdominal pain
