FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Ampyra Copay Assistance
What is Ampyra (dalfampridine) used for?
Ampyra (dalfampridine) is a prescription medication used to improve walking in adults with multiple sclerosis (MS). It is the first medication approved by the FDA specifically for this purpose. Ampyra does not treat MS itself; it targets the walking difficulty that many people with MS experience. Its generic name is dalfampridine, and it belongs to a class of medicines called potassium channel blockers.
How does Ampyra work?
In MS, the protective coating around nerves (myelin) becomes damaged, which slows or disrupts the nerve signals that control movement. Ampyra works by blocking tiny potassium channels in the damaged nerve fibers, which helps nerve signals travel more smoothly from the brain to the muscles. For some people, the result is improved walking speed. Your neurologist can explain what to expect.
How is Ampyra taken?
The usual dose is one 10 mg extended-release tablet every 12 hours, taken at about the same times each day, with a maximum of 20 mg (two tablets) per day. Tablets are swallowed whole and should not be crushed, chewed, or split. If a dose is missed, do not take a double or extra dose. Always follow the schedule your prescriber gives you.
What are the common side effects of Ampyra?
The most commonly reported side effects include urinary tract infections, trouble sleeping (insomnia), dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, and back pain. Most people have only mild side effects or none. This is not a complete list, and a serious risk to be aware of is seizures (see below). Always review side effects and warnings with your prescriber or pharmacist, and seek medical help right away for signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, swelling, or trouble breathing.
Who should not take Ampyra?
Ampyra is not recommended for people with a history of seizures, because it can increase seizure risk in a dose-dependent way. It is also contraindicated in people with moderate to severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance of 50 mL/minute or less), since the drug is cleared by the kidneys and can build up. Your provider will check your kidney function before and during treatment. Never take more than the prescribed 20 mg per day.
Does kidney function affect Ampyra?
Yes. Ampyra is removed from the body almost entirely by the kidneys, so reduced kidney function causes the drug to accumulate and raises the risk of seizures and other side effects. It is contraindicated when creatinine clearance is 50 mL/minute or below, and used with caution in milder impairment. Kidney function is checked at baseline and at least once a year during treatment.
How long does Ampyra stay in your system?
Ampyra has a relatively short half-life of roughly 5 to 6 hours in people with normal kidney function, so it is generally cleared within about a day, though this is prolonged in people with reduced kidney function. Because of this, it is taken twice daily to maintain its effect. Your provider can advise based on your individual kidney function and metabolism.
Is there a generic version of Ampyra?
Yes. Generic dalfampridine extended-release tablets are available and are often substantially less expensive than brand-name Ampyra. In many cases, switching to the generic is one of the simplest ways to lower your cost. QuickRx can check whether the generic is appropriate and covered under your plan.
How much does Ampyra cost without insurance?
Without insurance, brand-name Ampyra is expensive, with an average wholesale reference price around $95 per 10 mg tablet, which at the standard two-tablet daily dose adds up quickly over a month. Generic dalfampridine extended-release is far less, with reference pricing ranging from well under a dollar to roughly $67 per tablet depending on the manufacturer. These are benchmark figures, not the price you will pay. Cash-price estimates are available on GoodRx, and QuickRx can tell you what you would actually owe after insurance and assistance.
Is Ampyra covered by insurance?
Ampyra and generic dalfampridine are covered by many commercial and Medicare plans, though coverage, tier placement, and prior authorization requirements vary by plan. Many plans require documentation that you have MS and a walking impairment. QuickRx verifies your specific benefits, handles the prior authorization, and identifies assistance if your out-of-pocket cost is high.
Is there copay assistance for dalfampridine?
Yes. Copay assistance is available for both brand Ampyra and generic dalfampridine through manufacturer copay card programs, MS-focused foundation grants, and patient assistance programs. These can be hard to find and to keep active. QuickRx researches every program you may qualify for, completes the applications, and monitors your enrollment through renewals, all at no cost to you. Call (917) 830-2525 to start.
Is Ampyra being discontinued?
No. Ampyra remains FDA-approved and available, and generic dalfampridine extended-release is also on the market, which helps ensure ongoing access and lower-cost options for patients. If you ever have trouble obtaining your medication, QuickRx can help coordinate supply and shipping nationwide.
What is Ampyra copay assistance, and how does QuickRx help?
Ampyra copay assistance refers to programs, such as the manufacturer copay card, foundation grants, and patient assistance programs, that lower what you pay out of pocket. QuickRx does not issue these cards or grants; instead, our patient navigators determine which programs you qualify for, complete the enrollment for you, handle prior authorizations, and keep your benefits active through renewals. Our copay assistance service is always free.
Who qualifies for Ampyra copay assistance?
Eligibility depends on the program. Manufacturer copay cards are generally for patients with commercial (private) insurance and are not available to those on Medicare or Medicaid. Foundation grants and patient assistance programs may help government-insured or underinsured patients based on income, diagnosis, and U.S. residency. Eligible patients MAY pay $0 depending on their plan and program. The fastest way to know what you qualify for is to call (917) 830-2525.
Can I get help if I have Medicare or Medicaid?
Often, yes, though through a different route. Manufacturer copay cards usually exclude government insurance, but MS foundation grants and patient assistance programs are frequently available to Medicare and Medicaid patients who meet income and diagnosis requirements. The 2025 Inflation Reduction Act also capped Medicare Part D out-of-pocket costs at $2,000 per year, which has reduced the burden for many MS patients. QuickRx specializes in matching patients to the right program for their coverage type.
Does QuickRx ship Ampyra nationwide?
Yes. QuickRx is licensed in all 50 states and coordinates nationwide delivery. We work to keep refills on schedule so therapy is not interrupted, and our team is available to answer questions along the way.

How Much Does Ampyra (Dalfampridine) Cost?

The cost of Ampyra depends heavily on whether you take brand-name Ampyra or generic dalfampridine, and on your insurance. Brand Ampyra carries a high list price, while generic dalfampridine extended-release can cost dramatically less per tablet. The chart below shows representative average wholesale price (AWP) per tablet to illustrate the gap. These are reference figures only, not what you will pay; your actual out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan, deductible, and any assistance programs you qualify for.

Brand Ampyra (10 mg tablet)
$95.65 per tablet
Generic dalfampridine ER (10 mg tablet)
$0.32 – $66.84 per tablet

Pricing shown is average wholesale price (AWP) for reference and benchmarking only and does not reflect your actual cost. AWP is a benchmark, not a retail or paid price. Prices change and vary by pharmacy, plan, and region. Source basis: Lexicomp. For current cash-price estimates see GoodRx; for Medicare coverage see Medicare.gov; for full prescribing information see the FDA label.

Because standard MS dosing is 10 mg every 12 hours (two tablets per day), monthly cost differences between brand and generic can be substantial. The most useful next step is to let QuickRx run your specific situation against available copay cards and assistance programs to see what you would actually pay. Call (917) 830-2525 to find out what you would owe.
