These may occur in more than 1 in 10 patients:
Low calcium levels (hypocalcemia) – may cause muscle cramps, tingling, or confusion
Fatigue
Nausea
Diarrhea
Back pain
Joint or muscle pain
Headache
Shortness of breath
Pain in the arms or legs
Occurring in fewer patients but still important to monitor:
Constipation
Vomiting
Loss of appetite
Swelling in the hands or feet
Skin rash or itching
Increased risk of infections (e.g., bladder infections or skin infections)
Anemia (low red blood cell count)
These are uncommon but may be severe and require urgent care:
Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ): A serious condition where the jawbone begins to die. Signs include jaw pain, loose teeth, swelling, or exposed bone.
Atypical femur fractures: Rare thigh bone fractures that can occur with little or no trauma. Pain in the groin or thigh may be an early sign.
Severe hypocalcemia: Especially in patients with kidney problems or vitamin D deficiency. Symptoms include muscle spasms, seizures, and abnormal heart rhythms.
Serious infections: Including cellulitis, pneumonia, or urinary tract infections.
Allergic reactions: Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, trouble breathing, or hives require immediate medical attention.
Your healthcare provider may monitor:
Calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels – as these may drop during treatment
Creatinine – to assess kidney function
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) – may increase in response to low calcium
Mild symptoms: Like nausea or fatigue, are often temporary. Stay hydrated, rest, and consult your healthcare provider if they persist.
Signs of low calcium: (muscle spasms, confusion, numbness) – report immediately.
Jaw pain or dental issues: Notify your doctor before any dental procedures. Good oral hygiene and regular dental checkups are essential.
Signs of infection: (fever, chills, redness, or swelling) – contact your provider promptly.
