Tetrabenazine is a generic prescription drug used to reduce involuntary movements in patients with Huntington’s Disease.

How does Tetrabenazine help Huntington’s Disease?

Huntington’s Disease is a hereditary, progressive condition in which nerves in the brain degenerate. This causes the person to lose the ability to control their thoughts, emotions, or movements. Tetrabenazine reduces a chemical that transmits signals between nerves. This helps reduce brain signals that trigger involuntary movements.

What are some brand names of Tetrabenazine?

The brand names are commonly Xenazine and Nitoman among others.

What form does Tetrabenazine come in?

Tetrabenazine comes in tablet form.

What are the common doses of Tetrabenazine?

There are two doses:

  • Tablet 12.5MG
  • Tablet 25MG
How do I take Tetrabenazine?

Sometimes, tetrabenazine’s dose is changed several times to find out what works best for a patient. Therefore, it’s important to always take as prescribed.

Are there any possible side effects of Tetrabenazine?

Yes, there are several possible side effects. They include fatigue, sedation, decreased concentration, restlessness, or hyperexcitability. Unfortunately, there are even symptoms of depression or thoughts of suicide while taking Tetrabenazine. Therefore, stay alert to any changes in mood and contact your physician immediately.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, take the missed one as soon as you remember. However, if the missed dose is close to the time for your next scheduled dose, then skip the dose. Don’t take extra medicine to make up for missed doses.

If you miss your doses for more than 5 days in a row, ask your doctor before you start taking tetrabenazine again.
