Tecfidera and the generic Dimethyl Fumarate is prescription medicine used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS).
Typically, Tecfidera is administered twice per day, orally, for 7 days at 120 mg as the starting dose. Then, the maintenance dose after 7 days is 240 mg twice per day. However, your dose may differ. Be sure to talk to your doctor and take notes on how you’ll need to take your Tecfidera or generic Dimethyl Fumarate.
Tecfidera may cause serious side effects including allergic reactions, PML, decreased white blood cell count, liver problems, herpes zoster infections (shingles), and other serious infections.
These are typically mild and often improve over time:
Flushing (redness, warmth, itching, or burning of the face/body)
Stomach pain
Diarrhea
Nausea
Vomiting
Indigestion
Decreased appetite
Some patients may experience more significant reactions that require immediate medical attention:
Lymphopenia (low white blood cell count)
Increases risk of infection
Liver injury
Signs: yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, fatigue, abdominal pain
Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML)
A rare brain infection that can be life-threatening
Symptoms: confusion, vision problems, weakness, or trouble speaking
Allergic reactions
Hives, swelling, difficulty breathing
Rash
Pruritus (itching)
Erythema (skin redness)
Hot flashes
Elevated liver enzymes
Proteinuria (protein in urine)
This is not a complete list. If you are experiencing these or any other possible side effects contact your doctor right away to discuss them. If you are experiencing severe side effects or otherwise you are in urgent distress proceed to your nearest hospital emergency room.
We believe that high deductibles and copays shouldn’t prevent anyone from receiving the medications they need. That’s why at QuickRx, we help patients register with various public non-profit foundations and drug manufacturer programs to reduce the copays and out-of-pocket costs for the medication.
Tecfidera helps people with MS by:
Decreasing inflammation in the brain and spinal cord
Lowering relapse frequency
Slowing the progression of disability
Reducing the formation of new MS lesions
It doesn’t cure MS, but it plays an important role in managing the disease over time.
Tecfidera comes in pill form and is taken with water as directed by your doctor.
You need to take Tecfidera® exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is critical to maintain your pill routine. If you experience any adverse side effects, talk to your doctor immediately.
