What is Tecfidera (Dimethyl Fumarate)?

Tecfidera and the generic Dimethyl Fumarate is prescription medicine used to treat relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS).

What are the common doses of Tecfidera?

Typically, Tecfidera is administered twice per day, orally, for 7 days at 120 mg as the starting dose. Then, the maintenance dose after 7 days is 240 mg twice per day. However, your dose may differ. Be sure to talk to your doctor and take notes on how you’ll need to take your Tecfidera or generic Dimethyl Fumarate.

Are there any possible side effects of Tecfidera?

Tecfidera may cause serious side effects including allergic reactions, PML, decreased white blood cell count, liver problems, herpes zoster infections (shingles), and other serious infections. 

Common Side Effects

These are typically mild and often improve over time:

  • Flushing (redness, warmth, itching, or burning of the face/body)

  • Stomach pain

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea

  • Vomiting

  • Indigestion

  • Decreased appetite

Serious Side Effects

Some patients may experience more significant reactions that require immediate medical attention:

  • Lymphopenia (low white blood cell count)

    • Increases risk of infection

  • Liver injury

    • Signs: yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, fatigue, abdominal pain

  • Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML)

    • A rare brain infection that can be life-threatening

    • Symptoms: confusion, vision problems, weakness, or trouble speaking

  • Allergic reactions

    • Hives, swelling, difficulty breathing

Less Common Side Effects

  • Rash

  • Pruritus (itching)

  • Erythema (skin redness)

  • Hot flashes

  • Elevated liver enzymes

  • Proteinuria (protein in urine)
