Because Tecentriq activates the immune system, it can lead to immune-related adverse events (irAEs), where the immune system attacks healthy tissues. These are often serious but treatable if caught early:
Thyroid problems: Hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism
Adrenal insufficiency
Diabetes (including new-onset type 1 diabetes)
Hypophysitis: Inflammation of the pituitary gland
Pneumonitis: Inflammation of lung tissue
Symptoms: Cough, shortness of breath, chest pain
Colitis: Inflammation of the colon
Symptoms: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, blood in stool
Hepatitis: Inflammation of the liver
Symptoms: Jaundice (yellowing skin/eyes), nausea, fatigue, dark urine
Nephritis: Inflammation of the kidneys
Symptoms: Decreased urination, swelling, abnormal lab tests
Severe skin reactions: Rash, itching, peeling, blistering
(May require hospitalization or discontinuation)
Severe infusion reactions: Fever, chills, low blood pressure, difficulty breathing
Myocarditis (heart inflammation)
Meningitis or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain or spinal cord)
Pancreatitis
Ocular inflammation (e.g., uveitis)
Guillain-Barré syndrome (rare immune-related nerve condition)
Some immune-related side effects can appear weeks to months after treatment ends.
Patients may require long-term hormone replacement (e.g., thyroid or adrenal support).
Continuous follow-up with bloodwork and imaging is often needed.
Report any new or worsening symptoms to your care team immediately—even if they seem minor.
Take note of fatigue, bowel changes, or breathing problems early.
Keep up with routine lab work, including thyroid, liver, and kidney tests.
If you’re on steroids or hormone replacements, follow instructions carefully.
Avoid over-the-counter medications or supplements without approval from your doctor.
