6. What is Sprycel (dasatinib) and how does it work?

Sprycel (dasatinib) is an FDA-approved tyrosine kinase inhibitor used to treat certain types of blood cancers. It was first approved by the FDA on June 28, 2006 and is manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb. Generic dasatinib is also available.

How Sprycel works:

Dasatinib works by blocking BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase, an abnormal protein that causes cancer cells to grow and multiply. By inhibiting this protein, Sprycel helps stop the growth and spread of leukemia cells.

Sprycel also inhibits other kinases including SRC family kinases, c-KIT, and platelet-derived growth factor receptor (PDGFR).

For more information about tyrosine kinase inhibitors, visit the National Cancer Institute.

7. What conditions does Sprycel (dasatinib) treat?

Sprycel is FDA-approved to treat:

Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML), Philadelphia chromosome-positive:

  • Newly diagnosed adults in chronic phase
  • Patients with resistance or intolerance to prior therapy including imatinib
  • Pediatric patients with chronic phase CML

Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL), Philadelphia chromosome-positive:

  • Adults with resistance or intolerance to prior therapy
  • Newly diagnosed pediatric patients in combination with chemotherapy

Learn more about CML treatment at the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

8. How do I take Sprycel (dasatinib)?

Standard dosing:

  • Chronic phase CML: 100 mg once daily
  • Accelerated or blast phase CML: 140 mg once daily
  • Ph+ ALL: 140 mg once daily

Administration instructions:

  • Sprycel can be taken with or without food
  • Swallow tablets whole—do not crush, cut, or chew
  • Take at approximately the same time each day
  • If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for your next dose
  • Do not take two doses at the same time

Always follow your oncologist’s specific dosing instructions.

9. What are the common side effects of Sprycel (dasatinib)?

Common side effects (occurring in more than 10% of patients):

  • Fluid retention and swelling
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Skin rash
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Low blood cell counts (anemia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia)
  • Bleeding
  • Infections
  • Fever

Report any side effects to your healthcare provider. For complete safety information, see the Sprycel prescribing information.

10. What are serious side effects of Sprycel I should watch for?

Contact your healthcare provider immediately if you experience:

  • Pleural effusion: Shortness of breath, chest pain, dry cough
  • Bleeding: Unusual bruising, blood in urine or stool, coughing up blood
  • Heart problems: Chest pain, irregular heartbeat, swelling in legs
  • Pulmonary arterial hypertension: Shortness of breath, fatigue, fainting
  • Severe skin reactions: Blistering, peeling skin, mouth sores
  • Liver problems: Yellowing of skin or eyes, dark urine
  • Signs of infection: Fever, chills, persistent cough

Your oncologist will monitor you regularly with blood tests and imaging to watch for these complications.

11. What medications interact with Sprycel (dasatinib)?

Sprycel can interact with many other medications. Tell your healthcare provider about all prescription and over-the-counter medications you take.

Important drug interactions:

  • CYP3A4 inhibitors (ketoconazole, itraconazole, clarithromycin): May increase dasatinib levels
  • CYP3A4 inducers (rifampin, phenytoin, carbamazepine): May decrease dasatinib effectiveness
  • Antacids and acid reducers: PPIs and H2 blockers can reduce dasatinib absorption—avoid within 2 hours of your dose
  • Blood thinners and antiplatelet agents: Increased bleeding risk
  • St. John’s Wort: Avoid—may reduce dasatinib effectiveness

Filling all prescriptions at the same pharmacy helps identify potential interactions.

12. Can I eat grapefruit while taking Sprycel?

No—avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice while taking Sprycel.

Grapefruit can increase dasatinib blood levels and increase the risk of side effects. This interaction occurs because grapefruit inhibits the CYP3A4 enzyme that metabolizes dasatinib.

Other food considerations:

  • Sprycel can be taken with or without food
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
  • Discuss any dietary supplements with your healthcare provider
13. Can I take Sprycel if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

Pregnancy: Sprycel can harm an unborn baby and should not be taken during pregnancy. Patients who could become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment and for 30 days after the last dose.

Breastfeeding: It is not known if dasatinib passes into breast milk. Breastfeeding is not recommended during Sprycel treatment and for 2 weeks after the last dose.

Fertility: Dasatinib may affect fertility in both males and females. Discuss fertility preservation options with your healthcare provider before starting treatment.

If you become pregnant while taking Sprycel, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

14. What dosage forms does Sprycel come in?

Sprycel (dasatinib) is available as oral tablets in the following strengths:

  • 20 mg tablets
  • 50 mg tablets
  • 70 mg tablets
  • 80 mg tablets
  • 100 mg tablets
  • 140 mg tablets

Generic dasatinib is also available in all the same strengths from multiple manufacturers.

QuickRx dispenses both brand Sprycel and generic dasatinib based on your prescription and insurance coverage.

15. Is generic dasatinib as effective as brand Sprycel?

Yes. Generic dasatinib is FDA-approved to be bioequivalent to brand Sprycel, meaning it contains the same active ingredient in the same strength and works the same way in the body.

Key points about generic dasatinib:

  • Same active ingredient (dasatinib)
  • Same dosage strengths available
  • FDA-approved for the same indications
  • Often more affordable than brand Sprycel
  • May be covered differently by insurance

QuickRx can help you determine whether brand Sprycel or generic dasatinib is the most cost-effective option for your situation. Call (917) 830-2525 for assistance.
