FAQs

Is Octagam chemotherapy?

No, Octagam is not chemotherapy. It’s classified as an immunotherapy, not chemotherapy.

Octagam is an intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) product made from pooled human plasma. It’s used to treat conditions related to the immune system, such as:

  • Primary immunodeficiency (PI) – where the body doesn’t produce enough antibodies to fight infections

  • Chronic immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) – a condition where the immune system attacks platelets, leading to low platelet counts

Why It’s Not Considered Chemotherapy:

Chemotherapy typically refers to cytotoxic drugs that kill or stop the growth of rapidly dividing cancer cells. Octagam, on the other hand, works by modulating immune responses and replacing missing or malfunctioning antibodies—not by targeting or killing cells like chemotherapy drugs do.

So while Octagam may be given in a hospital or infusion center (like some chemotherapy treatments), its purpose and mechanism of action are very different.
